A House for Mr. Biswas by V.S. Naipul explores the psychology of breaking free of a stratified society. The story takes place in Trinidad and the characters are part of the Indian dispora the British brought to the Caribbean. It's a slower read than
The White Tiger but more nuanced and well worth checking out.
Deepa Mehta's
Water depicts India in 1947 through the eyes of a group of widows. Set against the backdrop of Ghandi's transformation of the country, the film portrays the rigidity of traditional Indian society.
I also recommend the other two films in the trilogy: Fire and Earth, Fire is about arranged marriages; Earth about the strife during the years surrounding 1947. There obviously is much more to each of the films, but they certainly provide insight to life in India from the perspective of an Indian woman.
